l chipped my front upper tooth a few weeks ago and l just got a permanent crown put on today. it looks awful! its bulky and sticks out and seems a tad bit longer than the rest of my teeth. l was only shown my crown a glimpse while laying down so the angle that l saw my teeth, it looked just alright. well after getting home and looking in a real mirror from all kinds of angles, l was dissapointed! l immediately called back and they had me come in and l told the dentist how unhappy l was. he did a bit of shaving but the crown sticks out so much that it didnt make it look any better. and now it feels like l loss the glossy-ness of the crown. my temporary crown l had in looked way better than this porcelin. l made another appt for monday but what else can be done? im afraid to get a new impression made and have it looking the same. does he need to drill my natural tooth some more? He already took nearly the whole thing off. l just dont know what else will be done differently so l dont have a bad crown coming back.

He can do the following to improve its appearance :

1. Of course make a new crown.

2. Yes, he will have to trim the tooth down more.

You r saying that the crown that u had inserted today is bulky. That means the tooth underneath was not shaved down adequately to create adequate space for the crown. l hope u did not tell him to be extra conservative with the tooth preparation.

Remember, the crown comes with a porcelain coating on top of the metal layer. You have to have at least a certain amount of thickness for both layers. Otherwise, the layers can fracture.

3. You can ask him to make a Captek crwon.

Such crown comes with the metal layer which is not black / silver. Instead, it is golden. That will prevent it from looking black along the gum line after a while.

4. The best result can be achieved by getting an all-ceramic crown like the Procera Crown(that does NOT have the underlying metal layer), etc.

The esthetic result can be very good.

The only problem is that u have to get the tooth shaved down a lot for the adequate thickness of the porcelain.

NOTE :

1. It all depends on whether u had Root Canal Tretament (RCT) done on the tooth or not.

Maybe ur dentist was not able to drill into the tooth to the desired depth because it is still a vital tooth (that has not had the RCT done).

2. Regardless of the type of crown placed, u HAVE to floss on adaily basis. The tooth underneath will still get decayed if the margins of the crown r not kept clean.

3. One last thing. You have to understand that no matter how perfect a crown is made, it will NEVER be as good as ur own (natural) teeth.

By shaving the tooth he will have removed the final gloss. This can only be regained by refiring it in an oven, it can not be polished up to a good shine.
l would ask that it be redone. If you're lucky, he will still have the original mould & the lab can have it remade from that. Otherwise a new impression will be necessary.
There usually should be no need to remove more tooth. Such errors as u describe r usually coming from the lab. Sometimes though it may be the dentist is fault in not removing enough tooth structure so that the lab has to make some compromises. But the final responsibility for accepting & cementing a tooth is that of the dentist.
Sometimes the colour matching for front teeth can be very difficult. It depends upon the skill of the dentist, the skill of the lab, the general lighting (tungsten/fluorescent/.). In difficult cases it may even be worth going to the lab where they will make up the crown as u wait.
When checking the colour/shape/size of the crown, it is good to bring a friend. Also, do not just look at it in the chair - get up & go to the natural light from the window too.
There r different types of crown available, but any decent lab should be able to make a good match given the right instructions or by seeing u directly.
