l have had a lot of differingfrom it being not rooted in the bone, to basically just baby teeth, to being a partial root removal.l need to get my premolars removed, the ones after my canine for ortho treatment and if it is a simple extraction then my insurance will cover it.But if its surgical then l have to go out of the office and its not covered.l was told that these teeth are not in the bone, and one oral surgeon said he could take them out in 10 minutes.l just canceled my appt. today with him to see if l can get it done at my school is dental center where l have insurance.l do not have an appt. until Friday, but does anyone agree on a definition for this?

l am a dental assistant and also an orthodontic assistant. l would be willing to bet that your extractions will be simple. Surgical usually means having to go in with a drill and section the tooth and remove the pieces. This usually applies to wisdom teeth or a tooth that is broken or breaks at the gumline. l have never seen an ortho extraction for a premolar be anything but simple! Hope this puts you at ease!

Well, l have not seen ur xray but if they said it is going to be simple..then it mean its not a super long or curved root that will be hard to seperate from the tissue & bone. They will use some local anesthetic (lidocane 2%) & make so u cannot feel ur face.then they will use an instrument to seperate the tissue from the tooth..another instrument to break the tooth loose..and a pair of forcepts to pull it out.Since it is not surgical, they will not put stitches in after to close the are. They will have u bite down on some gauze for like 30 minutes-to an hour to help the blood clot. They will give u gauze to take home & should give u written after care instructions (no hot food, no straw(suction will dislodge the clot), no spicy food..etc) Most patients we see (including small children) have no problems recovering & most insurances cover it.
