... drill out any remaining tooth pieces that are stuck up inside of your gums? That is what our new dentist did to my husband. It seems odd to me ... if they could do that why would you need an oral surgeon?l would think that some gum tissue would come out with the tooth pieces. And he was in a lot of pain after wards, more than l thought he should be.
silliegirl, yep, l agree. That is why l keep canceling appointments with them.l wonder if it would be rude to ask them if l could see their dental school diplomas close up?

Yes it is!! Sometimes the root of the tooth is so embedded into the bone area that you can not reach it w/ ordinary surgical instruments, thus you have to try to ''drill'' out the remainder of any bone fragments!!!

Unfortuntly there is a waiver signed before the procedure which should explain this. Extractions r very unpredictable & l have seen real easy ones & yes very difficult ones that u cant see with the xray. It is very possible they needed to do that so there was no chance of infection afterward. Some people even have bruises after extractions. So dont be suprised. Sorry it was so bad but at least its all over. If he is very good with the post op instructions it should not get worse. He should have a follow up appointment any way & it doesnt hurt to ask the dentist these questions too.
Good luck & God Bless

It is standard procedure to remove the whole tooth and not leave any roots behind. Sometimes this may involve removing broken pieces of the tooth under the gums. And after this many patients can have discomfort and soreness for some time. Sorry your husband is hurting. Hopefully he got some good pain medication.
